Ex-All Blacks coach Ian Foster joins Martin Devlin on It's Only Sport following confirmation 153-test lock Sam Whitelock will retire from all forms of rugby. Whitelock ended his New Zealand rugby career after last year's Rugby World Cup before enjoying a short playing stint in France. There were reports Whitelock was being courted by new All Blacks coach Scott Robertson to return and wear the black jersey again, but it never eventuated.

Foster talks to Devlin about what made Whitelock so special as a player, how good he was technically and how his game evolved, the old-school persona he embodied that differs from modern-day athletes, and more.

Martin Devlin is a veteran New Zealand radio and television broadcaster.
